Where to Start With ITIL®

The IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) Qualification Scheme develops IT Service Management (ITSM) skills and knowledge. Hundreds of thousands of IT professionals worldwide have acquired ITIL certifications. Accredited training from a global network of training providers and tests run by accredited institutions support the scheme. ITIL provides Foundation, Intermediate and Expert qualification levels with an advanced diploma for the most skilled ITSM practitioners. Training staff or hiring qualified personnel is one way to start adopting good practices. Training key staff in ITSM ensures focus on IT service development.

ITSM professionals receive accreditation from the UK Institute of Service Management (ISM) and institutes from other countries, while BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, recognizes IT Service Management as an important skill for IT professionals. Business schools and universities offer IT Service Management topics in IT-related bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees.

The international standard for ITSM built upon ITIL processes is the ISO/IEC 20000. The adoption of ITIL practices help organizations gain the ISO/IEC 20000 standard credential and provide proof of good IT services. ITIL aligns with other management frameworks and standards: COBIT, ISACA framework for IT governance, and ISO/IEC 27001 (international standard for information security), among others.

Another excellent way to start with ITSM is through colleagues. The IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) is a nonprofit that backs a global community of professionals and operates in more than 50 countries. Members include small, large and multinational companies from all sectors. itSMF opens opportunities to interact, contribute and share best practices with ITSM experts and practitioners worldwide.

ITSM makes perfect sense for businesses as a professional practice. ITIL has proven its place in the global enterprise. As more organizations gain an unequivocal understanding of its value, ITIL adoption will thrive. Enthusiasm to get more value from your organization’s IT investments will help, and ITIL is a brilliant way to kick off.
