The ITIL® Qualification Scheme: A Roadmap To Certification

The user experience programmers create is critical to the success of a business, but standing behind them are entire departments dedicated to ensuring those applications are available when needed. They must ensure these apps run efficiently, securely and responsively; and are not disrupted by changes or disasters.

This is the world of infrastructure service management. Job descriptions for infrastructure leadership positions frequently require ITIL® Certification. Not only does this certification add to one’s credibility, it brings with it a best practice approach to IT Service Management.

Understanding ITIL And Its Importance

ITIL is a set of disciplines developed over many years to ensure IT services are managed properly and cost-effectively. ITIL implementation can improve the service levels of an IT organization tremendously and help it adapt to changes in the company or industry.

There are many pieces to the ITIL discipline, so the ITIL Qualification Scheme was developed to help people choose the right path through education and certification. The ITIL Credit System provides a simple roadmap of the credits required to reach each level in the ITIL Qualification Scheme.

The Foundation: Understanding The World Of Infrastructure Management

The ITIL Foundation training course is the first step in the ITIL Qualifications Scheme and introduces students to the lifecycle approach of IT Service Management. Intermediate Level: Focusing on a Specialization

The ITIL Intermediate segment of certification is broken into two major streams:

  1. Service Capabilities
  2. Service Lifecycle

Each stream contains a number of courses, each of which provides 3 (Service Lifecycle) or 4 (Service Capabilities) credits in the Qualification Scheme. Courses within the streams may be mixed and matched.

Capstone: Managing Across The Lifecycle

The Intermediate streams converge at the Managing Across the Lifecycle Certification (MALC). Candidates can expect to gain understanding in the following areas:

  • Service lifecycle and management processes
  • Stakeholder management
  • Governance and organization
  • Measurement
  • Implementation and improvement of service management capability

There is a prerequisite of 17 credits in the preceding courses before Managing Across the Lifecycle can be attempted. Successful completion of this certification earns 5 credits, bringing the candidate to the 22 required in the ITIL Qualification Scheme.

 ITIL Expert: Pulling It All Together

Expert-level Certification requires completion of at least 22 credits within the Intermediate track, including the MALC. Not all Intermediate Stream modules may count towards ITIL Expert since some have considerable overlap. There is a separate application process, but no specific education requirements beyond those for Foundation and Intermediate courses.

ITIL Master: Proven In The Field

The Master Certification requires the Expert-level Certification plus five years of work experience in leadership or management roles within IT Service Management. This is a practicum requiring no further class work but significant documentation of qualifications.
