Although it’s important to learn about ITSM principles in a group context before applying them, many employees increase their vital knowledge even further by branching out on their own.

Here are some considerations to keep in mind when choosing ITSM training courses.

Performance Tuning

Managers rely on performance analysis and tuning to improve the way their departments operate, but employees should also apply these methods to their own work styles. In addition to analyzing their output using ITSM-style metrics, these workers can create better services that are ultimately more scalable and useful to clients.

While concepts like capacity and performance management are discussed in a number of  beginning ITIL courses, don’t be afraid to take these ideas to the next level. When selecting additional training modules, it’s definitely OK to sign up for management-oriented courses, such as modeling and application sizing, even if a specific job position doesn’t require such skills. Employees who apply these techniques on a case-by-case basis demonstrate that they’re ready for increased responsibility.

With all the branches and areas of specialization that one can explore within the ITIL framework, it may seem difficult to choose specific training programs. In addition, some of the popular specialized modules and courses aren’t available to those who haven’t surpassed basic knowledge levels.

Fortunately, most good ITIL courses incorporate the same flexibility that makes the framework itself so popular. While it’s true that one needs to complete the basics before moving on to advanced content, picking a specific area of knowledge doesn’t preclude one from going back and venturing down an alternate avenue later.
