ITIL®: What It Is and How to Train for It

ITIL® (Information Technology Infrastructure Library®) is a widely recognized approach to IT Service Management. ITIL was first created by the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) as a result of the growing dependency of companies on computer systems to run their businesses.

ITIL aims to fulfill the needs of businesses and understand and manage the core processes of a business. ITIL provides a basic set of guidelines which explains to business owners how they can use IT as a tool for business change, growth and transformation.

ITIL has been adopted globally by major organizations such as NASA, The UK NHS (National Health Services), Disney and HSBC.

The five books of ITIL include Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. Each book provides in-depth knowledge on each stage of the Service Lifecycle.

ITIL consists of a number of training courses and certifications. There are four levels in the ITIL Qualification Scheme – ITIL Foundation in IT Service Management, ITIL Intermediate Level, ITIL Expert, and ITIL Master. The training sessions make sure that employees have the relevant information and skills required to handle the implementation and running of ITIL. After each training course, an examination is held; the results of which determine whether the certification will be received by the individual or not. These certifications also ensure employers that their employees have complete knowledge and understanding of the framework.

There is a lot of training material available for those looking to equip themselves with an ITIL certification. This includes face to face training in a physical or even a virtual classroom. Online training courses, however, have been on the rise, and a number of organizations have been providing individuals with distant learning or virtual learning options.

The online training options traditionally include self-paced training and virtual instructor-led programs. Self-paced training allows you to set the pace of the course on your own.  The virtual instructor-led programs combine the features of a classroom-based setting with a virtual environment.  You will be able to communicate with your instructor and other classmates in real-time; however, everything is conducted online.
