What is ITIL®?

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library® (ITIL) is a set of global best practices designed for Information Technology Service Management (ITSM). ITSM ensures information technology (IT) alignment with the organization’s needs for process improvements, focusing on customer satisfaction.

The ITIL qualification curriculum includes the following levels, with each level focused on different aspects of ITIL best practices:

  • ITIL Foundation
  • ITIL Intermediate Level
  • ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle
  • ITIL Expert Level
  • ITIL Master Qualification

This curriculum allows candidates flexibility in various ITIL disciplines and also provides candidates with multiple options for achieving their career goals.

ITIL is needed as a foundation for ITSM. ITIL ensures that the organization’s IT infrastructure has a service-based focus on company growth and value as well as the customer. ITIL offers a worldwide approach to ITSM, providing a practical framework for recognizing, planning, implementing, and supporting IT services. It provides the processes and procedures necessary for business integration and strategy. ITIL is needed to demonstrate compliance and to measure business improvements. It is used as an enterprise tool to facilitate business growth and transformation.

History of ITIL

The concept of ITIL/ITSM began in the 1980s when British government officials identified insufficient IT services levels. The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) was asked to develop an improved framework for IT resources. The first release of ITIL was called the Government Information Technology Infrastructure Management (GITIM) and focused on service support and delivery.

In the 1990s, Europe adopted the framework, and soon ITIL became known worldwide. In 2000, Microsoft used ITIL as the foundation for their Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF). By 2005, ITIL was the most widely used IT Service Management program in the world. In 2007, the ITIL Service Lifecycle approach to IT Service Management was modified to place more emphasis on IT-business integration.

The Primary Benefits of ITIL

The ITIL best practices revolve around a professional approach to IT Service Management within five publications that serve as guides for the ITIL Service Lifecycle: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continual Service Improvement. The primary benefits that ITIL can provide an organization are focused on:

  • Streamlined services
  • Reduced costs
  • Improved customer satisfaction
  • Improved service delivery
  • Increased productivity
  • Better use of skills and experience

Adopting the ITIL best practices for ITSM is proven to transform IT organizations. Given the rate of technological growth and the importance of an IT infrastructure, ITIL and ITSM are key components in alignment with business strategies for success.

ITIL in the Workforce

ITIL has been accepted and put into place by businesses worldwide, including institutes, training organizations, IT firms, software vendors, and other leading-edge service providers. By completing the comprehensive qualifications through ITSM training courses and certifications, you are prepared to assist companies to effectively carry out IT best practices. ITIL provides a competent solution for IT Service Management and process improvements.

Why Should I Invest in ITIL?

ITIL provides candidates with an awareness of the main elements, concepts, and terminology used in the ITIL Service Lifecycle and how it integrates with IT Service Management practices. After completion and certification in the ITIL Foundation, Intermediate, and Expert Levels, you are ready to join the IT workforce where you can contribute to an organization. Your contribution to quality service improvements may also offer you a plan for personal success. In this current international state of technological advancement, your investment in ITIL could provide you with a valuable return on investment.
