Defining ITIL® And The Roles It Plays

ITIL TrainingITIL® qualifications represent major stepping stones for many professionals who want to broaden their career options. For individuals considering ITIL training, it’s important to first learn about the nature of this framework and decide whether it’s actually right for them.

Exactly What Is ITIL?

ITIL is a broad IT Service Management (ITSM) Framework devoted to helping IT service providers unify their business and technology practices. It addresses common concerns that crop up during the lifecycle of services, such as conceptualization, customer support, negotiation of service level agreements that define what applications should do and management of the costs associated with developing new avenues of technology.

Because ITIL best practices are widely accepted, workplace training often serves as an important career boost for lower-level employees who have a goal of becoming a manager.

Understanding What ITIL Is Not

ITIL is popular among employers because it provides them with an open framework. It does not, however, define concrete tech standards, like language-specific coding styles or best security practices. Unlike some ITSM Frameworks, ITIL is more heavily focused on business factors, such as budget oversight and resource management.

How Is ITIL Training Organized?

ITIL is divided into five volumes that address different aspects of the ideal service lifecycle. Because these volumes are focused more on the service itself than on the trainee, the progressive qualification levels, such as ITIL Foundation, Intermediate, Expert and Master, all address the full range of ITIL volumes. More advanced certifications simply require more in-depth knowledge.

ITIL standards have undergone a number of iterations since their original inception in the late 1980s. The latest revision, ITIL 2011, is managed by the U.K. Government, and it constitutes a globally-accepted set of guidelines.

What Is ITIL’s Primary Focus?

The specific tasks that firms use ITIL for vary widely, but the main goal of the framework is to improve the way businesses deliver all IT services. Although the comprehensive approach to quantitatively analyzing IT services may seem confusing to new trainees, the broad scope of the framework actually gives service providers leeway to choose how they want to improve their output.

ITIL training is important for firms and individuals alike because it helps people speak a common, business-oriented language even if they don’t share the same specific technical backgrounds. Diverse methodologies can be aligned in support of definite fiscal benchmarks to make new endeavors more efficient, and past projects can be upgraded to reach heightened levels of budget-conscious performance.

Career professionals who complete some form of training may find that doing so helps them advance to new positions, but the techniques they learn are usually applicable to their current work as well.
