Benefits of the IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®)

The IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) was established in the early 1980s by the British Government and is the most widely utilized approach for IT Service Management (ITSM) in the world. It presents a practical structure for identifying, planning, delivering as well as supporting IT services that organizations can adopt depending on their specific needs. ITIL is divided into 5 publications: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Continual Service Improvement. There are a number of benefits that are associated with ITIL. They include:

Enhanced IT services

IT has a distinct structure that clearly describes the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved. When processes and procedures are clearly outlined, the IT management is simplified and the internal communication is also enhanced. IT processes are standardized while integration points and handoffs become easily understood.

Reduced costs

As the IT services are enhanced, it becomes very easy for an organization to enjoy reduced costs. This is because staff distractions are eliminated, resulting in fewer anomalies. The staff also becomes more productive as they perform only the tasks that they are authorized to do.  Trade-offs between different levels of IT services and the costs involved are also better understood, giving way to more informed business decisions.

Improved understanding between IT and business

Both IT and business have a better understanding of the significance of the other. IT understands the day to day processes that the business supports. On the other hand, the business understands the resources that are needed for IT support. This improved understanding allows a smooth flow of work and improved functionality.

Increased productivity

When everyone involved has a clear understanding of his specific roles and responsibilities, it becomes easy for an organization to experience increased productivity. Enhanced communication between IT and business also facilitates the improvement in production.

Improved customer satisfaction

As the organization provides enhanced IT services, it becomes easy to improve its customer satisfaction. Customers find it easy to deal with an organization that is highly efficient and properly designed.

In order for an organization to experience these benefits of the IT Infrastructure Library, it must embark on a comprehensive qualifications scheme, whereby an array of training courses can be provided to the employees. This can allow the staff to acquire the relevant knowledge and skills that will allow them to adapt to this system and make the necessary amendments.
