Application Management

Application Management is responsible for supporting and maintaining operational applications.  This function provides the technical expertise and management for all the applications within an organization. The role of Application Management is quite similar to Technical Management; however, the focus is on software applications rather than the IT infrastructure.

Application Management manages the applications throughout their lifecycle. This function is also in charge of designing, testing, and improving the applications that are part of the IT services. Whether software is developed in-house or outsourced, Application Management has the essential technical know-how for controlling and monitoring applications.

In some organizations, applications are referred to as services; however, applications are really just one component needed in the provision of a service. Each application may support many services and each service may use many applications. This can be seen in the IT infrastructures of many modern service providers that utilize shared services which are based on service-oriented architectures.
