While on break from one of my Effective Presentations classes, a colleague started telling everyone about how he had been using different audio books to improve his presentation skills. To be honest, I was more amazed at the fact that he chose the “easy” or “convenient” way of reading despite being one of the most hardworking individuals at work.
While teasing him about that, he told me about the following benefits of choosing audio books:
- Increased Efficiency – Only your ears and mind will be focusing on the author’s words. Meanwhile, your hands and eyes will be free to do other tasks such as cooking or yard work.
- Easier to Block Out Distractions – Some people require quiet areas in order to read their books in peace. However, finding such a place in today’s world can be close to impossible. On the other hand, you can plug in your CD walkman or iPod and block out other distractions.
- Reduced Costs – Books cost more because of all the expenses required to publish them. Audio books, on the other hand, do not cost as much to produce. Thus, you won’t have to pay much for them and can even download some audio books for free.
- Easy Access to Important Information – If you bought a technical audio book and are interested in learning a certain part, all you need to do is press the fast forward button to get to the section you want to hear.
- Less Weight and Storage Space – Books need a lot of space to be stored, and the more technical they are, the bigger they will be. However, audio books are smaller, much lighter, and easier to stow away.
After hearing these, I was sold to the idea of using audio books.
