Service Operation Processes: Access Management
Access Management is the Service Operation process that deals with managing the access to services and making sure that services or applications are only accessed by those who have the authorization or need to access the information. The purpose is quite simple: security. Lower-level employees may not need access to certain higher-level information, whereas executives may be the only ones allowed to access proprietary information. With proper Access Management in place, organizations can provide the right level of access to information to the right people.
Access Management executes the regulations put in place by the organization to determine who can and cannot access different information throughout the business. This process ensures that users are able to access the services that they need; however, Access Management is not responsible for ensuring the access is available at all times. Availability Management takes care of when the services are available, whereas Access Management simply focuses on providing people with or limiting access to information.
There are many benefits to proper Access Management in any IT setting, including keeping the wrong people out and letting the right people in. Controlled access to services guarantees that an organization can more effectively maintain confidentiality. It also allows employees to have the proper access so that they can perform their jobs correctly and effectively. There are fewer errors, and it becomes easier to trace service abuse with this process in place. Access Management is a critical part for security and effective operations in any organization.
