Role of the CMS/Tools Administrator in ITIL® V3
For any IT organization to succeed, it is important that management understands the role of the CMS/Tools Administrator as highlighted in ITIL® V3. ITIL V3 is a manual full of practices, strategies, roles and techniques which can help IT organizations adapt to changes to ensure that their business operations continue to succeed. However, there are certain areas of ITIL V3 that are a bit complicated to understand without any explanation or assistance. Some of the roles mentioned in ITIL are more or less similar to each other which is why IT organizations are often confused about them. For instance, the CMS/Tools Administrator is often confused with the Configuration Manager. It is true that some of their responsibilities are similar, but they are two different posts that are equally important.
The Configuration Manager is responsible for the Configuration Management process. This person manages the Configuration Management System (CMS), which maintains information regarding all the Configuration Items in an organization.
On the other hand, the CMS/Tools Administrator has a different role. The CMS/Tools Administrator performs primary tasks such as collecting the CMS data and maintaining that data in the appropriate form. The CMS/Tools Administrator works with the Configuration Manager to ensure that Configuration Items are uniquely identified. The CMS/Tools Administrator also performs regular configuration audits to ensure the physical inventory matches the records.
The role of the CMS/Tools Administrator is described in detail in the Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) module which is part of the Service Transition volume. The main purpose of SACM is to maintain and store information regarding an organization’s Configuration Items along with their relationship with other Service Assets. To learn about SACM and the position and responsibilities of a CMS/Tools Administrator, enroll in the ITIL V3 Service Transition course at Ashford Global IT.
