The Role of the Configuration Manager as Designated by ITIL® V3
Today, it is estimated that more than 15,000 organizations around the world have adopted the practices and strategies mentioned in ITIL® V3. More than 200,000 copies of ITIL V3 have been sold to date. This is due to the fact that IT organizations are realizing the sheer need to be able to adopt changes and bring improvements to their business models periodically in a systematic manner. Organizations which do not implement ITIL’s strategies and processes may face failure and may be unable to acclimatize with the evolution of the IT environment.
One of the major roles highlighted by ITIL V3 is the Configuration Manager. The role of a Configuration Manager is described in the SACM (Service Asset and Configuration Management) module of ITIL V3 Service Transition.
Scope of the Configuration Manager Role:
The Configuration Manager is responsible for:
- Preparing and proposing all the processes, functions, strategies, and items that are to be recorded and controlled as highlighted in the SACM module.
- Developing Configuration Management standards and policies.
- Managing the Configuration Management Plan.
- Managing the implementation of new Configuration Management Systems.
- Discussing new or changed Configuration Management procedures with the stakeholders and communicating these changes to employees.
- Recruiting new Configuration Management staff and training existing personnel.
Managing the Configuration Management System (CMS):
The Configuration Manager oversees the CMS, which is typically made up of several Configuration Management Databases (CMDBs). The CMS stores information on all Configuration Items (CIs), where they are located, what type they are, and any such relevant background information. Creating this central repository allows the Configuration Manager and support team to query existing data instead of repeatedly researching it manually.
