An Introduction to the Service Lifecycle: Service Transition
Service Transition is the stage in the ITIL® Service Lifecycle that manages the transition of new or changed services into the live environment. The processes that will be most involved in this stage include Change Management, Service Asset and Configuration Management, Release and Deployment Management, and Knowledge Management. The goal of Service Transition is to create an efficient model for moving and changing services and activities without producing too many waves in the daily operations of the organization. Service Transition focuses on how to use best practices to create support models, workflow management, and knowledge bases as well as develop effective communication and marketing.
Service Transition is responsible for defining the activity metrics, KPIs and CSFs in an organization as well as generating reports and implementing automation tools to monitor and report on the various ITSM services and processes. Better transition in any organization means fewer disruptions and more productivity. For a business, this is always the goal. With the ITIL framework in place, it can be easy to implement effective changes and modifications through Service Transition.
Service Transition provides everything that is needed for managing the successful release of a project or service in any type of organization. The planning begins with the Service Strategy phase, where the organization figures out how to design and govern IT services. The planning continues with the Service Design stage, where the design is configured based on the customer's requirements. Another consideration in this phase is how smoothly a design will transition from plan into action within the organization. If something seems too disruptive, it will be refined until it meets a certain set of criteria to ensure a seamless transition into the live environment no matter how serious or minor the event or service may be to the overall success of the business. In fact, many of the smallest, most indirect services are the ones that will impact a business or organization most seriously if they go wrong. This is why Service Transition is vital to the Service Lifecycle.
